Working Through the Course – Tips, Tricks, and Advice
In creating the Hear Them Speak course, I designed the book as a college-level textbook, with a series of weekly classes followed by tasks to help students internalize the information. With that in mind, I suggested that readers should read only one chapter each week and do that week’s tasks before moving on. That is still a good way to approach the material.
Part of my reasoning was that I wanted to avoid having people blast through the reading without doing the tasks or the practice, without giving themselves time to digest and ponder and journal about the process. I felt that some might shortchange the process and then feel shortchanged themselves when they experience less-than-stellar results.
I also worried (Because yes, I am a worrier, when I’d prefer to be a warrior, but there it is.) that others might blast through the book without achieving proficiency, then come away believing (and claiming) that their opinions and imaginings are coming from animals and not their own ego.
But since the book’s launch several years ago, I’ve heard from plenty of people who felt compelled to keep reading until they’d finished the book to gain a macro-understanding before going back to the beginning and doing the week-by-week reading, tasks, and practice to internalize the understanding.
So my new advice is to “do” the course in the way that works best for you, but my warning is to give it your best effort, because I can promise you this: the proficiency you achieve will be proportional to the effort you expend.
